Dr Andrew Robert JACK
MA (Hons), LLB, PhD, MPP, NDipQS, Barrister & Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand
After leaving Pakuranga College in Auckland Andrew attended Auckland University where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Greek and a Master’s degree in Ancient Greek Social History and Egyptian hieroglyphics.
He moved to Wellington where he worked briefly for the Department of Internal Affairs before embarking on the big OE. After over-landing from Indonesia to Northern Ireland he returned to Wellington where he completed his law degree at Victoria University supporting himself with part time work at the office of the Wanganui Computer Centre Privacy Commissioner.
After graduating with his LL.B Andrew embarked on a PhD in law and also a Master’s degree in Public Policy. After admission to the Bar in 1992 Andrew went to work for Police in its Legal Section until his appointment as Chief Legal Adviser for the New Zealand Police in December 2002.
In July 2007 Andrew was appointed Group Manager: Legal and Advisory Services for the New Zealand Customs Service, where he was responsible for the provision of all Customs’ legal services and prosecution activity, as well as the provision of specialist advice on the tariff and rules of origin.
In March 2011 the Governor-General appointed Andrew Chief Censor. As Chief Censor Andrew was also the Chief Executive of the Office of Film and Literature Classification, an independent Crown Entity charged with protecting the public, in particular children, from the harm caused by unrestricted exposure to objectionable material.
Since 2006 Andrew has also been in sole practice as a Barrister and Solicitor, providing a wide range of legal services including property, family, civil litigation and employment advice and representation. He is a member of the New Zealand Law Society’s Property Law Section and has been admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Queensland and in Fiji.
Andrew and Janette live in Kaingaroa in the Far North and enjoy Tai Chi, cooking, traveling, dancing, motorcycling, and spending time with their three dogs.
